1.    Interview yourself.

Ask yourself the questions below and brainstorm the answers on a piece of paper to create your personal brand statement. What you come up with will form the basis of your personal brand statement.

  • Who am I and what do I stand for?
  • What am I good / great at? In addition, what do I really love doing?
  • Besides, what is important to me?

If you’re planning to publish your personal brand statement online or deliver it orally, the statement will ideally be no longer than 1 or 2 sentences, which will keep it sharp, short and to the point, making it a perfect example of web micro-content or an oral sales pitch.

3.    Get specific.

The best way to keep your personal brand statement concise is to be as specific as you can be about your strengths, about your achievements and about your ‘wow’ factor.

4.    Position your pitch well.

Once you’ve finalized your personal brand statement, be sure to put it where your target employers and key movers in your target market will see it. Post it on LinkedIn, on your blog or website, include it on your CV or use it to open your covering letters where appropriate.

5.    Adapt your written statement into an oral pitch

You can deliver this when you are face-to-face with people or on the phone. Think about the words you want to use to describe what you are about, what you have to offer and what you are looking for, so that when the opportunity arises to communicate this, you are ready.
